Determination Above All;
The NPCC INTER-UNIT QUIZ COMPETITION was held in july at the Home Team Acadamy harmony hall.This competition is a bi-annual event organised by the NPCC units.The competition objectives are to complement cadets’ general education provided by the schools, to increase cadets’ knowledge on matters connected with the Singapore Police Force and the NPCC, to increase cadets’ general knowledge and promote their awareness of current affairs and lastly to foster esprit-de-corps.Our school had sent in 2 teams of 4 with 1 reserve for each team.I took part in this too.Many schools took part in this.I was amazed by the number of cadets present for the competition that day.When we reached there, we got sitted quickly.We all sat for a written paper.My heart was beating very fast when the paper was given to me.Many things ran through my mind.I kept on askin myself whether is it going to be easy or whether will i be able to do well anot. But i told myself to keep calm and just do my best.The topics that we were tested were on the National Police Cadet Corps, the Singapore Police Force, National Education, etc..After one hour, the inspectors collected our papers back.The atmosphere started to be chaotic.All of us kept on comparing our answers.After 1 week, the results were out.Sadly, we did not get into the finals.Actually all of us did not expect to get into the finals as we were competing with top schools too.I think that all over efforts had paid off.Everything is not about winning.RIGHT??At least we had received some knowledge from this competition.
The INTER-UNIT ANNUAL .22 REVOLVER SHOOTING COMPETITION was held on june at the Home Team Acadamy range.Our school had sent one boy team and one girl team.I was in the girls team.I was so happy when the teachers told me that i have been selected for this competition.We had used the .22 of an inch calibre Smith & Wesson revolver for this competition.The standard Figure 2 and the NRA Centre-fire targets were used too.Each shooter had 2 stages to complete.The first stage was (figure 2 Target - 12 rounds @ 15m with 15 seconds for every 6 rounds) and the second stage was (NRA Centre-fire Target - 12 rounds @ 15m with 30 seconds for every 6 rounds).After each of us had our turn, our scores were accumulated and told to us at the spot.We were disappointed by our scores.We all had high expectations of ourselves.Even though both the teams did not make it to the finals, we know in our hearts that we had tried our best.There was no use in crying over split milk.We hope to do better in the up coming competitions.
At the Inter-UG Fancy Drill last year, NPCC won the first position. After watching the competition last year, as a NPCC cadet, I was inspired to join the fancy drill competition this year and feel the joy of success. Hence, I volunteered to join the fancy drill competition. We formed a squad of 20 and represented the NPCC uniform group.
The fancy drill was choreographed by my squad mates and was put together by our cadet inspector. We decided to be innovative and use umbrella for this year’s drill instead of rifles. Using umbrella was inspired by my teacher officer who saw it in National Day Parade’07. We felt that using the umbrellas added to our uniqueness. We trained very hard as one team and were ready for the competition within a short period. We even came back during our school holidays to rehearse.
On the day of the competition, everyone was nervous and excited. However, we were ready for the challenge. The umbrella technique worked well and the judges were impressed. I felt the joy of our hard work paid off when they announced that NPCC emerged as champions. We were so overjoyed with the results that some of us even burst into tears.
Through this competition, I have learnt many meaningful things. Firstly, I realized that true hard work really pays off. Secondly, co-operation and teamwork was also one of the key assets to our achievement. If we did not work together, winning this competition would not be easy. It also brought me closer to my fellow cadets. This fancy drill competition gave me an experience that I will never forget. I am definitely looking forward to the next year’s fancy drill competition.
A total of 31 NPCC cadets and 4 teacher-officers went to Hong Kong from 11th-14th June 2007. I was anxious as this was my first overseas trip alone. Although travelling alone may seem scary, I learnt to be independent.
The place I liked the most was the tram ride up Victoria Peak. The scenery of Hong Kong was attractive and breath-taking. I have learnt the importance of concentration from the tour guide. Being able to focus on your work is necessary to succeed.
On the second day, we went to the Tsing Yi Police Station. I have learnt about many different weapons used by the Hong Kong Police Officers. I also got to know the cadets of Junior Police Call (JPC). They were very friendly and we discussed the different kinds of training we underwent. Their teachers gave us a souvenir and treated us to some snacks. I was delighted and excited when I actually visited the prison cells. It was scary and intimidating. After the visit, I told myself never to break any laws.
After the Police Station tour, we went to the Lutheran School for the Deaf. We put up a performance for the children, which included a Malay traditional dance, a Wushu display and an Indian hip-hop dance. We also gave them little gifts which we brought from Singapre. Although the children were deaf, they enjoyed our performance by showing the thumbs-up. Three secondary three girls, together with their vice-principal, brought us for a tour in the school. There were many art pieces in the school, showing their talent in the Arts.
The next morning, we went to the Police Museum. I found out that the first Women Police Contingent in Hong Kong was in 1951. This museum was filled with detailed information about the history of Hong Kong Police. There was a total of four galleries.
Following that, we visited Disneyland. My eyes were glued to the surroundings as this was my first visit. I tried the indoor roller coaster and was hooked on it. However, I decided to watch some shows, instead of wasting too much time on the roller coaster. I liked ‘The Golden Mickey’ most. It was a very grand show, similar to a play. Other than fun, I have learnt many things from Disneyland. I learnt that we should plan our time wisely. I should follow my heart and my dreams will come true. Tarzan also taught me that being a hero is to do things that you never dreamt that you can actually do it. On the other hand, we should know our limits too
This Hong Kong trip soon came to an end and I felt reluctant to leave. It was really fun-filled and I am looking forward to our next overseas trip.
The days have arrived! We had a briefing on our Hong Kong trip and were told to divide ourselves into different groups. This grouping also allowed sec 1 students to know our seniors better. After having our lunch, we started our trip. Although it was quite tiring and exhausting to walk door by door, all of us perserved on and continued our newspaper collection to raise funds for the Hong Kong trip. The more we raised, the lesser we needed to pay for the trip. Everyone was putting in their effort trying to collect as much of newspaper as possible. I believed many of us had enjoyed this trip and learnt a lot of things. From this newspaper collection trip, I learnt to perserve even though we were facing difficulties.In the end, all of efforts paid off.We had earn quite a huge sum.
Today, we had a cooking competition. We got 3rd & a consolation prize. Although we did not really win, it was fun and worthwhile. Everything is not the matter of winning but how much effort we have put in for it.Group 1 cooked steamed ginger prawns while group 2 cooked fried fish with chicken rice & scrambled eggs with sausages. Group 2 got 3rd whereas Group 1 got a consolation prize. One of the judges told us to be more practical and to cook more simple food items such as noodles etc. And she said that if this were a camp cooking competition, we would have won hands down. In the end, Girl guides got both 1st and 2nd place.We had lots of fun during our practices for the competition.We had learn a lot of things like we need to be patient in order to start the fire.All our hard work had paid off.
